Experts and policymakers have gathered in Vienna for the 18th International AIDS Conference to evaluate current trends in HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention. Despite the widespread attention given to the subject, countries around the world continue to maintain draconian drug laws that are increasing the spread of the disease. Several leading AIDS, human rights and drug policy reform organisations and leading scientists are calling for urgent action to change current drug laws and incorporate evidence-based approaches to drug and HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention to reverse this trend.

Según la organización Transform, ya se ha confirmado que el diplomático ruso Yuri V. Fedotov ha sido nombrado como nuevo Director Ejecutivo de la Oficina de la Naciones Unidas contra la Droga y el Delito ONUDD. ¿Cuáles son las implicaciones de ese nombramiento? Rusia tiene uno de los peores registros en materias de políticas de drogas y derechos humanos: desconoce las pruebas científicas sobre la prevención del VIH entre usuarios de drogas y sus leyes punitivas de drogas empujan a los consumidores a los márgenes de la sociedad. Este nombramiento podría afectar también a los campesinos afganos que cultivan adormidera para opio. Según los rusos, ellos son los principales responsables de las 30 mil muertes que se producen anualmente en Rusia por culpa de las drogas.
